DIOCESE OF MAINE
GUIDELINES FOR REMEDIATION

Following are the general policies for all Deacon Candidates. The Committee on Holy Orders, in exceptional circumstances and in consultation with the Bishop, may decide about other appropriate remediation on a case-by-case basis.

CANDIDATES FOR THE DIACONATE

Preface:

In compliance with Canon 6.4b, Candidates for the Diaconate will present a written assignment prepared by COHO, the Diocesan Examining Chaplains (DEC), and the Bishop, in consultation with the DFP Coordinator. The purpose of this assignment will be to enable evaluation of a Candidate’s competence in "the seven canonical areas" (Canon 6.4a). Special emphasis will be placed on the particular situation in which the Candidate ministers, on how the canonical areas inform that ministry, and on how proficient the Candidate is in discussing these issues both within the Church and beyond.

Policy:

1. Candidates who demonstrate proficiency in the examination in all seven canonical areas will be deemed to have passed the examination.

2. The DEC will read the Competency Exam, meet to compare impressions, and make a report (with further recommendations as appropriate) to the Bishop.

3. Upon completion of any program of remedial study, a DEC subcommittee will determine if the Candidate has demonstrated proficiency in all seven canonical areas and shall report this to COHO. If the DEC subcommittee determines that the Candidate has not demonstrated such proficiency, then COHO shall advise the Standing Committee that the Candidate did not pass the examination as required by the Canons.
