Episcopal Diocese of Maine

Pastoral Relief Grant Program - 2004

Early in January, Ken Barrett, the Treasurer of the Diocese of Maine, sent a letter via the yellow envelope to ask all congregations what their expected status would be for 2004 with regard to assessment.

The letter asked if your congregation had been impacted by the actions of General Convention and if, due to those actions, your congregation would have a difficult time paying your 2004 assessment. At our Diocesan Convention, Bishop Knudsen announced a Pastoral Relief Grant process that would be designed by the Finance Committee to address these concerns.

If this is the case in your congregation and you would like to talk to a member of the Finance Committee and submit an application, please contact Laurie Kazilionis, Director of Finance, at 1-800-244-6062, ext 30 or via e-mail at lkaz@diomaine.org before February 10. Members of the Diocesan Grant Committee and the Diocesan Finance Committee will meet on March 3 to review applications and make a recommendation to Diocesan Council on March 27th.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Laurie or any member of the Finance Committee.

Letter to Maine Congregations from Diocesan Treasurer Ken Barrett
January 2004

Dear Friends in Christ,

It has been brought to the attention of the Diocesan Finance Committee that there may be a problem with certain congregations within the diocese meeting their assessment for the year 2004.  This could be due to certain actions taken at the General Convention last August.

This matter was addressed at Diocesan Convention in October.  During the discussions it was pointed out by the Finance Committee that a certain amount of monies would be available to assist congregations who could establish that the actions taken by the General Convention had indeed impacted their ability to collect the pledge money normally received from their stewardship campaigns.

The Diocesan Finance Committee is attempting to determine which of our congregations have been impacted by these factors, and, if so, to what extent their funds have been reduced for the forthcoming year.  The purpose of this letter is to ask for assistance in determining the ability to pay the congregation's assessment for 2004.

Will you please check off one of the statements listed below and return this letter to the Diocesan Office via mail (or fax to 207-773-0095) attn: Laurie Kazilionis, Director of Finance lkaz@diomaine.org at your earliest convenience.

Your answers will assist the Finance Committee in determining the impact on the diocesan budget and in preparing assistance to those congregations who establish their inability to meet their assessment because of the events of the General Convention.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Sincerely.

K.E. Barrett, Treasurer
